Silvan Ridge Winery
Carolyn Chambers purchased Hinman Vineyards in 1991 to help out its founder and her friend, Doyle Hinman. Doyle had established the Willamette Valley winery, located just 15 miles from Eugene, in 1979 as Lane County’s first. In addition to improving operations, Carolyn's daughter Liz added Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec, a varietal that is a specialty of Winemaker Juan Pablo “JP” Valot, from Mendoza, Argentina. “JP makes sure our wines are of great quality at good value. I probably have the best staff in the world – all have been with me for seven to 20 years,” says Liz, who bought Silvan Ridge from the family estate when Carolyn passed away in 2011.
The fabulous wines we featured:
2011 Oregon Rogue Valley Malbec
- Silvan Ridge Malbec is made in such small quantities that the winery doesn.t submit it for reviews or enter it into competitions.
- Just 391 cases made.
Tasting Notes: On the Nose: Intense aromas of ripe, dark fruits pair with delicate notes of violet and lavender. On the Palate: A rich, concentrated parade of flavors led by an enticing melange of spices, dark fruit and oak. The finish is long and lingering.
2011 Oregon Pinot Gris
- 86 points, Wine Enthusiast
- Pair with: Shellfish, angel hair pasta with shrimp.
Tasting Notes: On the Nose: Fragrances of melon and tropical fruit dominate. On the Palate: Alluring flavors of citrus and tropical fruit merge into a silky softness on the palate and in the finish. Crisp, bright acidity.
Winemaker's Notes
Gold, Del Rio and Belmont Vineyards in the Rogue Valley appellation, located in Southern Oregon’s Jackson County, supplied the fruit for this 100% Malbec. Kraemer, Ellis, Kliewer and the Silvan Ridge estate, all in the Willamette Valley, supplied the fruit for the Pinot Gris. Its cool climate is outstanding for this grape variety.
