Stags Leap Wine Cellars
Founded in 1970, it was a time when the Napa Valley was undergoing a renaissance after the devastating effects of prohibition. Although there had once been some 140 wineries in the valley, there were fewer than 20 by the mid-1960s when a new spirit of excitement returned to the Napa Valley.
The fabulous wines we featured:
1999 "FAY" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
- 91 points, Wine Spectator
- 91 points, Connoisseurs. Guide
Tasting Notes: This wine opens with aromas of raspberry and cherry, rosemary, green and black olives, vanilla and violets, all swirling in a background of mellow, aged wine characteristics. Its flavors mirror the aromas with the addition of anise, wintergreen and creamy chocolate notes.
2000 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
- 91 points, Wine Enthusiast
- 91 points, Wine Spectator
Tasting Notes: Classic blackcurrant cassis aromas characteristic of quality Cabernet, with hints of aromatic cedar and just a touch of freshly brewed black coffee on the nose. Cabernet blackcurrant follows through in the flavor, shaped by fresh acidity and soft, palatable but still perceptible tannins.
Winemaker's Notes
For the 1999 vintage, a vineyard in Rutherford provided “Rutherford Dust” characteristics, as well as plumy fruit, earthiness and tea leaf qualities.
The S.L.V. vineyard supplied the fruit for the 2000 vintage. This historic vineyard was planted in 1970, and the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet it produced went on to win the world-famous 1976 Paris Tasting.
