Have a Holly-Cali Christmas: Traditional California Christmas Celebrations

California Christmas celebrations can be a little different. Northern California and mountains may see some snow, but for the southern part of the state (and it is a really big state) the weather is mild if not downright balmy.  Short sleeves are common and shorts are not surprising. Curling up up in front of the fire with the air conditioning going is not unheard of.

In coastal California, walks on the beach on Christmas afternoon are a tradition, possibly with some sand castle building.  Do you want to build a sand man? Kids of all ages are probably riding bikes and skate boards rather than sledding.  Evening strolls are often planned with friends to see neighborhood houses decorated and lit up.  A thermos of hot chocolate is optional.

Satsuma and Pixie tangerines are in season and are often used as stocking-stuffers, along with meaty California walnuts.

For many families,  it wouldn’t be Christmas Eve without tamales.  Homemade or purchased from restaurants and private chefs, these can come with a variety of fillings, including beef, pork, chicken, cheese, and sweet (pineapple).  Plenty of fresh salsa and, if you are lucky, guacamole and chips accompany this.  We recommend a fruity white (think Riesling or Chenin Blanc or Viongnier) or a Rosé for pairing.

Famed Winemaker Daniel Gehrs invites his guests to help make the tamales.

“The stage is set with farolitos (paper bags with votives burning inside) lining the driveway, and a crackling fire of fragrant juniper of cedar. We prepare the tamale filling ahead of time and have the corn husks soaking and ready as guests arrive.  The table is set with bright candles, colorful Mexican linens, and ornaments.  The guests eagerly line up in an assembly line to fill the softened corn husks, a glass of Daniel Gehrs wine in hand.  We have found guests really enjoy a meal where they can participate in the process!”

Grilling is also popular, with Tri-Tip being a central coast favorite.  Rubbed with salt, pepper and garlic, and grilled simply, over oak, this is delicious with a Syrah.  Beans and garlic bread are the traditional side dishes.

However you celebrate the holidays, we hope it is merry.  Want to share some California sunshine?  Give a wine club gift of California wine.
