Why We Like Flawed Wine

Our team tastes every wine we feature.
Our Team of Personal Wine Consultants, Eva, Lisa, Natasha and Joann, tasting with club president Gerri-Lynn Becker (center).

Musty, moldy, and acrid.

Three common aromas that indicate your wine has gone bad.   We’ve all been there. Pop goes the cork and immediately, you know.

“When we come across a bad bottle, our office gathers around!” says President Gerri-Lynn Becker. “Some flaws erupt from the bottle, and are easy to spot. Others are more nuanced and harder to pinpoint. These are the bottles we really like to dissect. Training our palates involves being able to recognize the obvious, and not so obvious, flaws.”

We taste and select every wine we feature. Hundreds of wines are rejected each year. That’s a lot of bad wine we keep from getting to our wine club members. We are a small business and it matters a great deal to us that the wines we send are ones our members will love. Our promise has always been that we will only feature wines we would proudly serve to our friends and family in our homes, and we mean it. Learn more about how we choose wines.

Get More Out of Your Tastings

We’ve pulled together our best techniques to help you learn more about the wine in your glass. You’ll identify flavors, recognize tannins, and experience acidity.  It all adds up to figuring out what qualities YOU like best in wines, which is what a great wine tasting adventure is all about. See 5 techniques to train your palate.

Reminder: Memberships with The California Wine Club come with our Love It Guarantee. If you ever get a bad or broken bottle, or one that just doesn’t “shine” for you, let us know and we’ll replace it. See all Wine Club Member Benefits.

Share What You Love

Since 1990 we’ve grown by word-of-mouth because people like what they taste and they tell their friends. Refer a friend, family member or business associate to our club and when they join, you’ll receive a $100 Wine Credit. Learn more.

In ever so many years, we’ve only experienced one bottle of “skunked” pinot noir. Most of the rest have been truly superb!

Ladies, keep up the great work that you do for all of us no longer living in wine country!

Thank you for the kind message, Dr. Chase! As a reminder, if you ever receive a bottle from us that has turned, is broken, or is just not to your taste, let us know and we will replace it right away. Cheers to you!
